Occasionally I am asked for good math book references for 4th and 5th graders. I know many Argonaut parents have suggestions, so please post them here and I can try to summarize for Math Olympiad families for the future.
Below are early results with 11% of teams reporting their scores.
Our mathletes are jammin'. We had 3 perfect scores in contest 4, one of which was a 4th grader. Nice work all! Below are early results with 20% of teams reporting their scores.
Our mathletes are doing well. We had 12 perfect scores in contest 3, three of which were 4th graders. For some, the contest was another opportunity to learn the importance of working out problems on paper and checking your work. Nice work all! The contest had two especially challenging problems for 4th and 5th graders alike.
The first image is the percent correct per problem. The second image is total correct per contest.
David Frederick PTA Chairperson for Argonaut Math Olympiad We and many other schools appealed to moems.org about the accepted solution to problem 1C on the grounds that the question was ambiguous and the answer 972 should be accepted. This appeal was denied. The best denial reason in my opinion was: "If the 'certain 3-digit' number were written in words, the order is absolutely clear: left to right. Without that phrase, there might be a possibility of merit to this appeal; however, with the phrase present, it is clearly defined to be the standard sense of a left-to-right reading of the digits of THAT number. By 'NOT reading the number backwards or forward', they have bypassed a crucial fact of this problem."
Parents should drive slowly near Argonaut when dropping off and picking up their child, as it is dark during class time and some walk and use the crosswalks.
Our season is off to a good start. One contest down, 4 to go!
We have 8 5th graders with perfect scores and 1 4th grader. I have challenged contest problem 1C with moems.org on the grounds that the question was ambiguous and the answer 972 should be accepted. We shall see. Below are early statistics for 26% of teams reporting their scores. -- David Frederick PTA Chairperson for Argonaut Math Olympiads Enrollment is almost closed for the 4th grade. Over 50% of the Argonaut 4th grade girls are enrolled, which is more than last year, plus there are several women coaches this year which is great for balance and role models for keeping interest up in STEM areas of education. If the LGS Rec Dept waiting list becomes large enough to open another team I will try to find more parent coaches.
Math Olympiad is open for enrollment for 4th and 5th graders. Please find more info on the Los Gatos Recreation Department website (look for Math Olympiad at Argonaut): http://register.asapconnected.com/courses.aspx?coursegroupid=6531&ind=1
